Coaxial connectors are electromechanical components used to connect coaxial cables and play a crucial role in electronic devices and communication systems. A coaxial connector mainly consists of an outer conductor, an inner conductor, and an insulator. The outer conductor is typically made of metal such as copper, aluminum, or stainless steel, providing good conductivity and shielding performance. The inner conductor is usually a central lead, also made of metal, and is used for signal transmission. The insulator is used to isolate the outer conductor from the inner conductor, preventing signal leakage and interference. Common materials for insulators include PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) and polyolefins.
Common Types and Uses of Coaxial Connectors
BNC Connector
BNC stands for Bayonet Neill-Concelman, and it comes in both male and female versions. The connector shape is cylindrical and features a bayonet-style coupling for quick connection and secure locking. BNC connectors were once the standard for video transmission in surveillance systems, commonly used in early analog CCTV systems to connect cameras and coaxial cables for video signal transmission. They are also used in amateur radio equipment and electronic test instruments (such as oscilloscopes and signal generators paired with BNC cables) to connect RF signals for measurement and debugging.
SMA Connector
SMA stands for SubMiniature version A and is a small, precision coaxial connector. It comes in standard SMA and reverse-polarity SMA (RP-SMA, where the inner and outer conductor polarity is reversed compared to standard SMA). The connector features small threaded dimensions. SMA connectors are commonly used in RF modules for communication base stations and low-power microwave devices to interconnect RF signals between boards and modules. RP-SMA connectors are also commonly used in Wi-Fi devices, such as wireless network cards and routers, to connect external antennas and ensure reliable wireless signal transmission.
SMB Connector
SMB stands for SubMiniature version B and is smaller than the SMA connector. It is a push-on type, allowing for quicker connection and disconnection, and comes in straight and right-angle versions. SMB connectors are often used in portable communication devices and small electronic equipment in aerospace, where size and weight are critical. They are also used in consumer-grade Bluetooth speakers and smart wearable devices to optimize space in RF circuit designs.
N-Type Connector
The N-type connector is a medium to large-sized coaxial connector with excellent electrical performance and the ability to handle high-power transmission. It comes in both 50Ω and 75Ω impedance types and connects via threaded coupling, ensuring strong sealing and stability. N-type connectors are widely used in professional broadcast and television transmission and reception systems for high-power RF signal transmission, ensuring long-distance, high-quality signal broadcasting. In wireless communication base station antenna systems, N-type connectors meet high-power signal transmission requirements and reduce signal loss.
F-Type Connector
The F-type connector is simple in design and low in cost, consisting of an outer conductor with threads and a central pin. It is available in both imperial and metric sizes. F-type connectors are widely used in cable television (CATV) networks to connect coaxial cables to set-top boxes and televisions, making it a common connection component for home TV signal reception. They are also used for wiring connections between outdoor antennas and indoor receivers in satellite TV systems.
Boobrie f type L shaped cable connector can reduce signal leakage and prevent moisture penetration for maximum signal reliability and performance to ensure no loss to picture or sound quality to increase conductivity, high transfer speed, durable and long-lasting use.
Boobrie gold-plated connector’s excellent resistance to normal wear and tear prevent oxidation and corrosion and provide over 500cycles of the product, while gold’s non-magnetic properties make it undisturbed in strong magnetic environments. In addition, the threaded part of adapter is covered by a protective sleeve, which ensures that the protect is not worn out during transport.
